Lacroix Island at Rouen

Older than other Impressionists, Pissarro was a role model for many of the artists represented in this gallery. His prolific output demonstrates a lasting willingness to explore new styles and techniques.

Pissarro depicted urban and rural industry throughout his career. Factories and barges are common motifs in his paintings of the Seine River, which was an important commercial route between Paris and the English Channel during the Industrial Era. Here, he captures a marina in the heart of Rouen, in northern France. Smokestacks rise above Île Lacroix and the left bank, while a steam barge approaches in the middle distance. With their twin interests in modernity and atmosphere, the Impressionists often incorporated smoke or haze caused by industrial pollution into their landscapes.
