In the 1870s, Tissot settled in London and established a reputation for painting social events and well-to-do people. This work depicts a self-consciously modern gentleman of wealth, refinement, and sophistication. By holding his watch closely he indicates that the train is running late, yet he remains composed and calm. This gesture also highlights the importance of the railroad era and the new organization of time zones, as travel between zones on high-speed trains created an increased need for personal watches.
