Washerwomen
Magnasco was a prolific painter with a distinctive style characterized by rough, open brushwork and the liberal use of highlights. this genre of painting was among the eight works added to the Nazis "Reichsliste" in 1938 after Richard Neumann's collection was inventoried in compliance with anti-Jewish laws imposed by the Nazi government after the Anschluss. On th eback of the painting, is a seal indicating that it was part of the collection at Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM). Six of the eight works from the Neumann collection that were added to the "Reichsliste" were transferred to the KHM. They were not allowed to leave Austria and this painting remained on view in the museum's galleries until it was returned to Dr. Neumann's heirs in 2011.
