Mt. Washington is home to two remnant butterfly populations left isolated near the summit after the last ice age.

The White Mountain Arctic flies in late June through late July and is generally found above 5000'. The Purplish Fritillary flies from mid-July into mid-September and is generally found near 4800' feet.
